The Month in Gaming: July 2012

My gaming this past month primarily involved the Final Fantasy brand (three of them!), with a new system also thrown into the mix. Here are the details.   Final Fantasy VII was not only the very first game I ever played in the series, but also the first RPG I ever played to its end, originally back in 1997. Returning to the game so many years later, after having played through its six predecessors, how did it stack up? Check out the full review of Final Fantasy VII here!     Again,

The Month in Gaming: June 2012

I'll be halfway through the Final Fantasy series after this month is over, as well as having finished up the Mass Effect trilogy. How were they each?   Considered one of the top two titles in the entire series, I was eager to dive in to this game. I had played it years ago as part of Final Fantasy Anthology, released for the original PlayStation, but I didn't recall the gritty details. I had visions here and there of memorable moments, but it wasn't like I could really tell anyone

E3 2012: Nintendo Press Conference (Live Blog)

Nintendo
Just like I did for Microsoft and Sony, I figured I’d live-blog my reactions to the E3 2012 Nintendo Press Conference. Here we go.   Initial Thoughts Full disclosure: I'm not really a fan of Nintendo. They were big when I was a kid, and the Super Nintendo is undoubtedly my favorite old-school game console but, as I've grown up, I don't really feel that they have. Futhermore, for every generation since (and including), the Nintendo 64, their competitors have offered better, be it

E3 2012: Microsoft Press Conference (Live Blog)

Microsoft
Okay, so it's not so much "live" as it is my own thoughts in real-time as I watch the press conference! Anyway, here we go!   Initial Thoughts Microsoft traditionally offers what I find to be a decent conference, showcasing interesting things to come over the next year. However, I often see reviews of The Big Three (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) ranking Microsoft 2nd or even 3rd, despite my own personal feelings that they've consistently done well. Whether this is deep-seated anti-Microsoft

E3 2012: Sony Press Conference (Live Blog)

Sony
Just like I did for the E3 2012 Microsoft Press Conference, I figured I'd live-blog my reactions to the E3 2012 Sony Press Conference. Here we go.   Initial Thoughts I haven't followed Sony much in recent years. You could attribute it to me being more of an Xbox guy and finding Nintendo to be a wasteland of constantly recycled games sporting mediocre graphics. However, in the past six months or so, I really fell in love with Sony. I upgraded to PlayStation Plus and have reaped tons

The Month in Gaming: May 2012

While I mostly bounced between two games again this month -- one a handheld and one a console, as usual -- I also had a third come back into the mix.   Being the fifth month of the year, this month's Final Fantasy title was naturally Final Fantasy V, a game I had played long ago when it came out as one-half of the original Playstation's Final Fantasy Anthology over a decade ago. The only thing I really recalled about the game was not liking it and eventually giving up on it; prior

The Month in Gaming: April 2012

My gaming this past month was much more focused than it has been the prior couple of months. I really only played two games, consistently, with a few trials of my new PS Vita instead.   Continuing with my goal of playing each single-player Final Fantasy game this year, one per month, I primarily played Final Fantasy IV. As mentioned in my original post, I was not sure if I would go with the PlayStation Portable version, which included two additional added post-game bonus sequel packs,
